- SynopsisBased on the director's autobiography. A comedy drama about a group of elderly expatriate English women living in Florence in 1934. One of the group, who are known as the 'Scorpioni', finds herself looking after the illegitimate son of her employer, after the boy's mother dies, aided by the group's self-appointed leader and a rich American Jewish socialite. As the fascist regime tightens its hold, the diplomat's widow contacts Mussolini who invites her to Rome for tea and reassurances. The group remains in Italy and, after the outbreak of war are interned. The American woman secretly pays for them to be housed in more comfortable quarters whilst covertly helping Italian Jews to escape until her own life is endangered. (Synopsis) Comedy drama.
